Bendel Insurance Apologises to NPFL, Warns Coach Boboye Over Referee Clash

Bendel Insurance Apologises to NPFL, Warns Coach Boboye Over Referee Clash

Bendel Insurance FC has issued an unreserved apology to the Nigeria Premier Football League and the Nigeria Referees Association following an ugly confrontation involving head coach Kennedy Boboye during their Matchday 32 game in Benin City. The club condemned Boboye’s behaviour as “ugly and unfortunate” after the 2-2 draw. Management has warned the coach and his assistants that any repeat will not be tolerated at home or on the continent. As part of NPFL sanctions, Bendel Insurance will play three consecutive home matches behind closed doors, starting with the Matchday 34 clash against Abia Warriors. Fans and supporters have been asked to stay away from the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium during this period. The club urged all coaches, players and officials to learn from the incident. They stressed that heated arguments with match officials achieve nothing but harsher penalties.

Why do you think Bendel Insurance felt compelled to apologise so fully after Coach Boboye's clash with the referee?

That makes sense. They likely wanted to protect their club's reputation and maintain good standing with the league after a public dispute.

I'm not convinced they needed such a full apology; a note of regret could have been enough.

It's unusual for a club to apologise unreservedly; no many teams dey take such strong stance after coach misconduct.

While apology seems appropriate, some fans might argue that punishing the coach directly could have been more impactful than a public letter.

Clubs should develop clearer protocols for handling referee disputes to avoid public embarrassment and ensure staff understand acceptable conduct.
