Why Peter Obi Says He May Skip the 2031 Presidential Race

Why Peter Obi Says He May Skip the 2031 Presidential Race

Peter Obi says his chances of running for president in 2031 are very slim. He pointed to Nigeria’s zoning arrangement between the North and South as the deciding factor. In a chat with media personality Rufai Oseni, Obi explained that if the presidency moves to the North in 2027, it won’t return to the South until 2031. By then, he would be 78 years old and doubts he could mount another campaign at that age. However, he added that if power stays in the South in 2027, he might reconsider a bid in 2031. For now, he’ll wait for the outcome of the next election before making any final decision.

Do you think Obi's reluctance to run in 2031 because of zoning will change Nigeria's political balance? I'm curious to hear views.

I agree that Obi sitting out could open space for new alliances and shake up the usual power blocs.

It's interesting that zoning overshadows competence in this discussion, as if regional rotation matters more than track record or policy vision.

Isn't dismissing Obi's potential candidacy too fatalistic? Perhaps voters could challenge zoning norms instead of sidelining strong candidates.

Political parties might start advocating for flexible zoning arrangements, letting merit guide nominations while still respecting regional representation demands.
