Iran Executes Man Over Military Base Arson During January Protests
Iran has executed Amirhossein Hatami for his role in an arson attack on a Tehran military facility during the mass protests in January. His appeal was rejected and the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence. Officials say Hatami admitted entering the restricted site, setting it ablaze, causing damage and attempting to seize weapons. The judiciary reports that all cases tied to the January anti-government movement have now been concluded and sentences are being carried out. Human rights groups, however, question the fairness of these trials. Amnesty International had listed Hatami among several detainees at risk of execution, alleging they faced torture and forced confessions. Last month, Iran also executed three men convicted of killing police officers during the same protests.
