Kaduna Tragedy: Over 2,800 Ex-Textile Workers and Families Die Awaiting ₦35 bn in Unpaid Benefits
A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Kaduna State as more than 2,800 former textile workers and their relatives have reportedly died while waiting for ₦35 billion in unpaid gratuities and compensation. The debt stems from the collapse of four textile firms—Kaduna Textiles, Nortex, Fine Tex and Arewa Textiles—which shut down between 2002 and 2004. About 9,000 employees lost their jobs and have struggled for two decades to secure their terminal benefits. Under the Coalition of Closed Unpaid Textile Workers, Kaduna State chapter, survivors are appealing to President Tinubu, the 10th National Assembly, state governors, community leaders and civil society to intervene and ensure these long-overdue payments are made.
