Ensuring Fair Primaries: Upholding Due Process in Nigerian Political Parties

Ensuring Fair Primaries: Upholding Due Process in Nigerian Political Parties

The legal challenge by former Senator Ayo Arise over the 2026 APC senatorial primary has reignited public focus on internal party democracy. I believe this debate goes beyond one election. It is about whether parties truly uphold transparent processes and earn member confidence. In 2018 I raised similar concerns during the APC primaries in Ifako-Ijaiye. I questioned accreditation, voting procedures and result collation. Good intentions alone cannot replace clear planning and strict compliance with party rules. Strong institutions, not powerful individuals, sustain our democracy. Fair primaries restore trust and strengthen political parties. How can parties ensure due process in their next primaries?

True talk! APC fit open up all delegate lists, invite independent monitors, and share clear primary timetable to calm nerves.

It seems internal democracy issues persist even when high-profile senators challenge results, suggesting deeper flaws in party procedures need addressing.

I'm not convinced a court ruling alone will change party habits—members still lack real leverage in selecting leaders.

Party committees should publish clear primary schedules and allow independent monitors to verify vote counts ahead of every election cycle.
