Argentina captain Lionel Messi saw his second spot-kick of the 2026 World Cup saved by Egypt’s goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir in their Round of 16 clash at Atlanta Stadium. Opta confirms this is the first time any player has missed two penalties in a single World Cup finals outside of a shootout. Egypt had earlier taken the lead through Yasser Ibrahim and continued to frustrate the defending champions as the match progressed.
