Civil Society Applauds Tinubu’s ₦3.3tn Power Sector Debt Clearance

Civil Society Applauds Tinubu’s ₦3.3tn Power Sector Debt Clearance

Hope Alive Initiatives (HAI), a pro-good governance group, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a ₦3.3 trillion payment to settle gas debts owed to electricity generation companies. The payment forms part of the presidential power sector financial reforms programme. It aims to stabilise the national grid, improve electricity supply from GenCos to distribution firms and benefit households and businesses. In an Abuja statement, HAI said the move demonstrates strong leadership and the administration’s commitment to reviving the power sector. They noted that clearing this debt will restore investor confidence, attract fresh funding and enhance service delivery across Nigeria.

Debt clearance alone won't guarantee steady power. We still lack adequate infrastructure and proper maintenance plans.

It's notable that HAI praised this move, but we've seen similar debt clearances without lasting improvements.

While the gesture sounds positive, I worry this payment won't translate into lower tariffs or prompt better power supply.

Prioritising transparent monitoring of how the funds reach generation companies could ensure the reform actually boosts electricity production.
