Edo State Provides ₦1m Grants and Soft Loans to Returnees Fleeing South Africa’s Xenophobic Attacks
Dozens of Nigerians, including 41 Edo indigenes, arrived in Lagos after fleeing xenophobic violence in South Africa. Many stepped onto home soil with only the clothes they wore and the hope of a fresh start. In Benin City, the Edo State Governor welcomed the returnees at Government House and announced a ₦1 million grant for each person. He said this cash would cover immediate needs and secure accommodation while longer-term support programmes took shape. The governor urged them not to let past violence define their future. “Your success begins today,” he said, promising soft loans and business assistance to help them fully reintegrate. Returnees shared stories of lost businesses, homes, and assets. They said the swift, personal outreach by Edo State officials restored their confidence and gave them renewed hope to rebuild their lives.
