Inside Boko Haram’s AI-Driven Attack Planning

A recent report from a leading AI policy programme reveals that Boko Haram now uses artificial intelligence for attack planning, weapons troubleshooting, explosives design and drone operations. Researchers interviewed former members across Borno and Adamawa states. They uncovered dedicated AI units in both ISWAP and the JAS faction. These teams included bomb-makers, engineers, intelligence officers and senior commanders using ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other systems. Foreign Islamic State operatives organised training and supplied laptops, VPNs and premium accounts. AI specialists analysed battlefield images, compared attack strategies and sent tactical updates to fighters. The report documents how AI guided device design, logistics, operational security and methods for crossing defensive trenches. It shows how Boko Haram has turned public chatbots into a technical support network under strict command control.
