Senator Advocates Recognising Native Doctors Who ‘Intercede’ with Ancestors in Health Reform

Senator Garba Maidoki from Kebbi South has urged formal recognition of traditional healers in Nigeria’s healthcare framework during debate on overhauling the food and drug regulatory law. He argued that many rural residents rely on indigenous remedies and that native doctors treat ailments beyond modern medicine’s scope. Maidoki said including them in the legal framework would reduce dependence on imported drugs and promote local herbs. The senator also revealed that some lawmakers turn to herbal treatments when conventional medicine falls short. He noted that traditional healers can “intercede” with ancestors to help patients receiving spiritual messages. Senate President Godswill Akpabio responded with good humour, agreeing that native doctors could bridge communication between lawmakers and their forebears.
