France Removes South Africa from G7 Summit Amid U.S. Pressure

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has been disinvited from the upcoming G7 summit in Evian after the United States threatened to boycott if Pretoria was invited. Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said France withdrew the invitation following sustained pressure from the Trump administration. He cited US objections over South Africa’s trade and race policies, previous tariffs, and its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Magwenya downplayed any long-term fallout, insisting the move will not weaken South Africa’s close ties with France. He added that Pretoria remains committed to constructive engagement with the United States beyond any single administration.

South African leaders should quickly engage alternative diplomatic partners to offset the fallout from this G7 summit exclusion.
