World Drug Day: New Threats and Innovative Strategies in the Fight Against Addiction

World Drug Day: New Threats and Innovative Strategies in the Fight Against Addiction — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This year’s theme highlights how the global drug problem continues to evolve. Addiction in Nigeria and beyond is a public health, mental health, family, and economic issue. Millions struggle with substance use disorders and many suffer in silence because of stigma. The drug landscape is shifting rapidly. New synthetic substances emerge and social media is used to promote and distribute drugs. Young people face exposure earlier, while misinformation spreads faster than evidence-based health advice. We need stronger prevention programs, early education, better access to treatment and rehabilitation, and evidence-based policies. Compassion must replace stigma, and communities must support recovery. Addiction is a health condition, not a moral failure, and the fight against drug abuse belongs to all of us.
