Why Weren’t We Taught How to Understand Our Emotions?
I have been thinking about how we are taught Maths, English and Government in school, yet hardly anyone teaches us how to handle emotions. When we feel overwhelmed, anxious or simply not ourselves, many of us learn to smile, carry on and keep it hidden. I have noticed this in myself. I often push down what I feel instead of trying to understand it. Even learning to name an emotion properly, rather than saying “I’m fine” or “I’m stressed,” can make a difference. There is so much pressure to appear strong, especially when raising children or balancing work, family and other responsibilities. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you learn to understand your emotions instead of just pushing through them?
