Iran Denies Planned US Talks as Trump Says Diplomacy Has Begun

Iran has denied that direct negotiations with the United States are scheduled, contradicting President Donald Trump’s claim that talks would begin after Washington paused planned military strikes. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tehran had no plans to host a US delegation or send officials to Washington. He also said there had been no change to the status of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran confirmed, however, that technical talks with Oman are continuing over arrangements to protect commercial shipping through the strategic waterway. Iranian officials described the discussions as constructive and said an agreement could be nearing completion. Trump said Gulf leaders, including Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and the leaders of the UAE and Qatar, urged him to delay military action to give diplomacy a chance. The conflicting accounts highlight uncertainty over whether wider US-Iran negotiations are actually underway.
