17 Years Without an Oba: Britain’s Direct Rule of Benin (1897–1914)
From the February 1897 sack of the Old Palace to July 1914, Benin had no Oba. British residents ruled directly, burned the royal compounds and looted over 4,000 bronzes. Oba Ovonramwen was exiled, died in Calabar, and his throne remained empty for 17 years. In July 1914, Britain crowned his son as Oba Eweka II under strict colonial conditions. He held a title but no real power. British Residents controlled the army, treasury, courts and even foreign relations until Nigeria’s independence. Hundreds of Benin artifacts still sit in foreign museums while the palace museum at home is empty. To restore true sovereignty, we must demand the return of these treasures and acknowledge how colonial law chained the throne.
