Ghe Ghe and the Danger of Blind Influencer Fandom Among Nigerian Youths
Nigerian youths often show the loudest opinions online, where mob mentality can make it difficult for people to think independently. The growing culture of becoming devoted “fans” of influencers is another concern. Some followers copy an influencer’s dressing, speech and lifestyle, then accept every opinion without question. Marriage, relationships and other major life decisions are personal choices. No online personality should have the power to decide them for anyone. Influencers and online commentators, including those promoting extreme relationship or feminist views, often profit from views, shares, comments and live streams. Their advice may be content for business, while their private lives can differ greatly from the message they sell online. Young people should listen critically, keep their independence and avoid building their identity around any internet personality.
