Kano Assembly Sounds Alarm as Tuta Absoluta Wrecks Tomato Farms
The Kano State Assembly’s Agriculture Committee has warned of a severe outbreak of Tuta Absoluta, a destructive tomato pest spreading across major farming areas. Committee Chairman Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim presented findings showing infestations in Bagwai, Shanono, Rogo, Tofa, Bunkure, Kura, Garun Malam, Rano, Kibiya, Tudun Wada and Dawakin Kudu LGAs. He noted the pest attacks tomatoes at every stage, destroying leaves, stems, flowers and fruits. Officials fear the outbreak will drive up tomato prices and worsen shortages nationwide if not contained. The committee urged the state government to provide insecticides, pheromone traps, protective gear and extension support through KNARDA. Recommendations include farmer training on integrated pest management, collaboration with research agencies, and relief assistance to affected growers. The Assembly has called for urgent action to protect the state’s tomato production and food security.
