Semenyo Urges Black Stars to Get ‘Streetwise’ with Refs After England Penalty Snub

Semenyo Urges Black Stars to Get ‘Streetwise’ with Refs After England Penalty Snub

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo says the Black Stars must be more assertive with match officials after feeling hard done by a controversial non-penalty in their 0-0 draw with England. Semenyo described how England defender Ezri Konsa’s challenge on Prince Kwabena Adu looked a clear spot-kick but neither the referee nor VAR intervened. Coach Carlos Queiroz even joked that the VAR team had “gone for coffee” during the incident. Ahead of Ghana’s must-win Group L clash with Croatia, Semenyo stressed the need for players and coaches to pressure referees more. He suggested staying down longer and rallying around officials to influence key calls.

I'm not convinced rougher tactics with refs will help; you risk more bookings without changing referee biases or decision standards.
