Borno Govt Introduces Quranic Oath for Reintegration of Repentant Terrorists
The Borno State Government now requires terrorists who have undergone rehabilitation and deradicalisation to swear on the Quran before they return to society. The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development explained that this final ritual carries serious spiritual implications and is intended to deter any return to violent activity. Commissioner Zuwaira Gambo highlighted that defectors who surrender are viewed as traitors by former allies, making a return to insurgency effectively impossible. She said the final Qur’anic oath marks the end of the Borno rehabilitation model and underscores the seriousness of their commitment. Despite this measure, Gambo identified inadequate funding as a major challenge for the programme. She noted the difficulty in providing sustained support, including food, clothing and access to education for all participants.
