40 Feared Dead After Boat Carrying Farmers Capsizes in Sokoto

At least 40 people are feared dead after a boat carrying farmers to rice farms capsized in Gorau town, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Witnesses said the passengers were crossing a stream when the canoe overturned shortly after take-off. Many of those onboard were reportedly between 10 and 15 years old and included farm owners and labourers heading out to harvest rice. About 40 bodies have reportedly been recovered, while six people, including the village head, were rescued. Local divers and residents are continuing search and recovery efforts for passengers still missing.
