Former Acting Accountant-General Jailed 72 Years for Diverting N868.46m Security Funds

Former Acting Accountant-General Jailed 72 Years for Diverting N868.46m Security Funds

On March 23, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, the former acting Accountant-General of the Federation, on nine counts of money laundering. He was sentenced to eight years on each count, totaling 72 years, to run concurrently without an option of a fine. The judge ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had proven the charges beyond reasonable doubt. He described Nwabuoku’s redirection of funds meant for security and defence as “appalling,” and praised the EFCC for its thorough investigation. Evidence showed Nwabuoku served as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Ministry of Defence from 2019 to 2021. During that period, he diverted public funds and later refunded over N200 million, a repayment the defence did not dispute.
