Buruku-Wukari Bridge: Benue Expects Safer Travel and Faster Farm Trade by 2027

The Benue State Government and host communities say the ongoing 854-metre Buruku-Wukari dual-carriage bridge will improve safety, trade and access between Benue and Taraba when completed. Deputy Governor Sam Ode said the bridge will reduce deaths and losses linked to boat crossings on the river. He said it will also provide a shorter route for farmers in Buruku, Logo, Katsina-Ala and Ukum to move yams and other crops to markets across Nigeria. The Federal Controller of Works in Benue said the project began in 2023 under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund. Pile caps and piers have been completed, while precast beams are ready for installation. Work in the river has slowed because of high water levels during the rainy season, and completion is expected in December 2027. Community leaders said the project could boost local commerce, create jobs and improve links between Benue, Taraba and neighbouring states.
