NUPENG Sounds Alarm Over Rising Job Losses, Demands Just Transition for Oil Workers

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has raised concerns about escalating job losses and growing suppression of workers’ rights in the country’s oil and gas industry. NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha warned that subsidy removal and other reforms have left many members, especially those in the informal sector, facing severe economic hardship. He urged the government to reskill, retrain and fund workers to ensure a fair transition as gas becomes the preferred energy source. Akporeha also criticised the exclusion of union leaders from key policy discussions and highlighted rising unfair labour practices, including restrictions on union membership. He vowed to pursue every lawful avenue to protect collective bargaining rights. Addressing security and infrastructure challenges, he noted a surge in petroleum truck hijackings, kidnappings and impassable roads that further strain workers. He called on government and industry stakeholders to prioritise job protection and uphold the dignity of those powering the nation.
