Bricklayer Remanded for Alleged Defilement of 17-Year-Old in Awka
A 39-year-old bricklayer was remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre over accusations of defiling a 17-year-old girl. The Children Sexual and Gender-based Violence Offences Court heard that the alleged offence took place in Umudioka, Awka South LGA of Anambra State. The prosecutor told the court that the girl, who lived with her mother—a former wife of her father—became pregnant and was later sent to live with her father. After she revealed how she became pregnant, her father reported the matter to police, leading to the bricklayer’s arrest. The accused pleaded not guilty and claimed the girl had told him she was 19. The case was adjourned to June 10 for further hearing under provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition and Protection Law of Anambra State.
