Elite Gold Label Renewed for Okpekpe International 10km Road Race

Elite Gold Label Renewed for Okpekpe International 10km Road Race

World Athletics has renewed the Gold Label for the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race. This endorsement cements its status among the world’s top road events and highlights its role as Africa’s premier 10km race. Since debuting in 2013, Okpekpe has risen from a local race in Edo State to a global fixture. It earned its first label in 2015, advanced to Silver in 2018, and achieved Gold status in 2022. The 11th edition is set for May 23, 2026. It will be the only labelled road race on that day worldwide. The course starts on Apana Road, traverses rolling hills and tarred roads, then finishes in Okpekpe town. Kenya’s Daniel Ebenyo and Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui hold the current course records. “The renewed Gold Label is proof of our high standards,” said Zack Amodu, race director. Each year, the event boosts tourism and commerce in Edo North. With registration open and top athletes expected, anticipation is already building for an unforgettable race.

Renewing the Gold Label sounds impressive, but it might not guarantee top international runners will choose Okpekpe over established races.

I'm not convinced a Gold Label tag changes much for local runners who've supported the event since 2013.

To attract more world-class athletes, organizers could offer travel grants or partner with regional race promoters to boost visibility.
