EFCC Crackdown in Ekiti Exposes an Economy Built Around Internet Fraud
Reports of near-empty hotels, lounges and supermarkets in Ado Ekiti have raised an uncomfortable question: how much of the local economy had come to depend on spending linked to internet fraud? Residents and business owners say an increased EFCC presence has pushed many suspected fraudsters and their associates out of the state. I visited a prominent hotel and a popular lounge to see the situation myself. Both were unusually quiet. Traders, landlords, mechanics and car dealers also described falling patronage after the reported exodus. The deeper concern is not only the temporary loss of business. It is the growing acceptance of unexplained wealth among young people, families and schools. When fraud is treated as a shortcut to success, honest work, education and integrity lose their value. Ekiti and Nigeria must create credible opportunities for young people while refusing to celebrate wealth whose source cannot be explained. Empty hotels may recover, but restoring a generation's faith in honest labour will be far harder.
