Lazio Chief Lotito Petitions Senate for FIGC President’s Resignation After World Cup Playoff Defeat

Lazio Chief Lotito Petitions Senate for FIGC President’s Resignation After World Cup Playoff Defeat

Lazio president and Italian senator Claudio Lotito has formally petitioned the Senate to demand FIGC president Gabriele Gravina’s resignation. The move follows Italy’s 1-1 draw and subsequent penalty shootout loss to Bosnia that ended their World Cup qualification hopes. The defeat in Zenica was compounded by a first-half red card for Alessandro Bastoni. Despite overseeing a third straight failure to reach the World Cup, Gravina has shown no indication of stepping down. The Sports Minister has publicly called for Gravina’s resignation, and the FIGC president has convened an emergency meeting in Rome with representatives from Serie A, B, C, the amateur leagues, and players’ and coaches’ associations. A full Federal Council meeting is set for next week. Protesters have gathered outside FIGC headquarters, hurling eggs at the building in a display of rising frustration.

Lotito's dual role as Lazio president and senator already raises questions about mixing sports and politics, especially when results on the pitch go wrong.

I'm not convinced calling for resignation fixes anything; poor World Cup form had deeper issues long before Gravina took office.

The federation should set clear performance benchmarks and independent oversight to prevent political flare-ups disrupting football development.
