Martin Keown Blasts VAR: Eze Should Have Earned Penalty vs Atlético

Arsenal icon Martin Keown has criticised referee Danny Makkelie for overturning Ebere Eze’s penalty claim in the 1-1 Champions League semi-final first leg against Atlético Madrid. Makkelie initially spotted a foul on Eze but spent 45 seconds at the pitchside monitor and viewed 13 replays before ruling there was no contact. Speaking on Final Score, Keown argued that VAR overstepped its role and suggested the official buckled under pressure from the Atlético crowd. “He should not even have been sent to the screen,” Keown said. “There was definite contact and it was clumsy from Hancko.”
