Uncovering the New Meter Scam by Port Harcourt EDC in Calabar

I was told the new prepaid meter is free but paid N10,000 for installation. It came loaded with 20 “free” units. After those units ran out, my meter showed a mysterious N13,521 arrears. At the published Band A rate of N209 per unit, 20 units should cost about N4,180. Yet I’m billed over N13,000. That amount could actually buy around 64.6 units — enough for a small family for more than a month. Why are consumers forced to pay hidden charges? This feels like a deliberate overcharge on top of already high electricity rates. My experience happened in Calabar under Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company. Is this scam limited to the power sector, or are other industries doing the same? I’m frustrated and want answers for fellow Nigerians struggling with these unfair practices.

Do we know if any extra fees were tacked on to hit that N13,521 figure post the free 20 units?

Do you know whether they applied higher tariffs on units beyond the initial 20?

It does look suspicious that the meter installation was billed at N10,000 despite claims of a free device and preloaded credits.

Perhaps it isn't a deliberate scam but just an awkward billing system nobody bothered to clarify.
