Pharma Import Ban: Good Intentions Hampered by Poor Planning
Reducing or banning pharmaceutical imports can boost local production. But the new policy lacks a clear roadmap. Practitioners first heard about it on the news, not through consultations. Agencies like NAFDAC, SON and Customs need precise directives. They must know how to enforce standards and tackle fake drugs and cartels that exploit the system. Stakeholders such as the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria deserve operational guidelines on regulation, public engagement and price control. Without these, local manufacturers could create shortages and hike prices, as seen in past rice policies. Above all, the public must be informed and educated before enforcing this ban. Good policy thrives on structure, timing and protecting citizens first, not on emergency announcements.
