Calabar Blaze Destroys Four Shops, Traders Count Heavy Losses
A fire gutted four shops along Murtala Mohammed Highway, Ishie Town, Calabar, in the early hours of Sunday. The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency launched a damage and needs assessment to determine losses and identify victims’ immediate humanitarian needs. The exercise was led by the agency’s Director-General, the Calabar Municipality Vice Chairman, and officials of the Nigerian Red Cross Society. A laundry service and a fashion design shop were hardest hit. Sewing machines, fabrics, generators and other equipment were lost, and parts of the building sustained structural damage. Officials expressed sympathy and pledged state government support based on the assessment data. Traders were urged to stay hopeful and inspect electrical wiring regularly to reduce fire risks. One affected shop owner described the incident as devastating, noting the business was her family’s only source of income.
