‘Shameful’: Troost-Ekong Condemns CAF’s Award of AFCON Title to Morocco

‘Shameful’: Troost-Ekong Condemns CAF’s Award of AFCON Title to Morocco — 1 of 8
1 / 8

Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has condemned CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy and hand it to Morocco. He described the unprecedented move as “shameful” and said he was stunned when he first heard the news. Troost-Ekong questioned how any team could truly celebrate a title won off the pitch rather than on it. He argued that results, however painful, must be respected and said he would feel “ashamed” to accept a trophy decided in the boardroom. He also expressed sympathy for the Senegalese players, highlighting the emotional toll of overturning a final’s outcome. “Senegal will always claim they are the winners,” he said, “and I can’t imagine how those players are feeling.”

What do you think triggered CAF's surprising decision to award the AFCON trophy to Morocco instead of Senegal?

You're right, that twist caught everyone off guard. CAF move really felt unexpected from start to finish.

I understand the surprise, but perhaps CAF applied a technical regulation or clause we haven't considered.

It feels odd that CAF would overturn a tournament outcome without any clear precedent or explanation from their side.

I get his frustration, but blaming CAF alone overlooks bigger issues like politics and inconsistent refereeing in African football.

Fans upset by this decision should follow official CAF statements, join supporter forums, and push for greater transparency in tournament governance.
