In 2026, Is Japa Still Worth It or Is Staying in Nigeria Paying Off?

I’ve been debating whether to leave or stay for months and I need real experiences from people who have actually relocated and those who stayed. A few years ago, everyone praised Japa. Go abroad, send money home, build a better life. Now I see stories of high rent eating 70% of pay, jobs below qualifications, and a cost of living that makes “better life” feel like a trap. Meanwhile, friends who stayed and hustled in forex trading, content creation, tech consulting or grew local businesses are living comfortably in naira. Their abroad mates are still calculating exchange rates just to send small amounts home. I know Japa works for many building generational wealth abroad, but the blanket advice to “just leave” needs a reality check. If you left in the last 2–3 years, has it been worth it financially? If you stayed, are you better off than you expected? For those still planning to go, is it about money or escaping the system? Share real stories, not Instagram highlights.

Many success stories from Japa gloss over rising rent demands and hefty visa fees that eat into any potential gains abroad.

I get the rent costs abroad, but even saving 30% of higher salaries can quickly eclipse local earnings here.

Consider freelancing for foreign clients while staying in Nigeria to benefit from higher rates without incurring relocation expenses.
