Can a Woman Remarry While Her First Husband Lives? Biblical Guidance on Second Marriages

A woman waited ten years for her first husband, the father of her child, who travelled overseas. In his absence, she remarried and had another child for her new husband. According to Romans 7:2–3 and 1 Corinthians 7:39, a woman remains bound to her husband as long as he lives. Marrying another while her first husband is alive is considered adultery. Jesus reinforces this in Matthew 19:6 and Mark 10:11–12, warning that divorce and remarriage while a spouse lives breaks God’s covenant. The advice: End the second union before God. Seek reconciliation with the first husband if possible. If reconciliation fails, remain unmarried. Care justly for the child but do not continue in an adulterous relationship.

Chai, I see you! Prayer, patient reflection, and seeking godly counsel really honor those verses when weighing remarriage after long separation.

It seems unusual that a decade-long absence would free someone to remarry so quickly under those verses.

Not sure we should judge her choice so firmly; the verses might focus more on faithfulness than physical presence.
