Prophet Calls on FG to Intervene After French Embassy Holds Nigerian Passports for Months
A Nigerian cleric has appealed for urgent government action over the alleged unlawful retention of passports by the French Embassy in Lagos. He described the treatment of visa applicants as hostile, unprofessional, and discriminatory. Professionals, students, and families reportedly have had their passports held for more than two months without updates. The prolonged detention of travel documents, he argued, violates Nigerians’ right to freedom of movement. He noted that passports remain the property of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and should not be indefinitely withheld by a foreign mission. He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Immigration Service to take diplomatic steps, enforce reciprocity, and safeguard citizens’ rights.
