Anambra Police Urges Cultural Reform to Protect Widows’ Rights
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has condemned the mistreatment of widows by their late husbands’ families. He spoke at a Human Rights Accountability Meeting in Amawbia, Awka, organised by a local NGO and the state police command. Orutugu explained that harmful cultural practices often strip widows of their rights to property and children. He reminded residents that under Nigerian law a legally married widow is entitled to her husband’s assets and custody of their children. He urged husbands to write wills to secure their families’ future and called on communities to amend traditions that conflict with the constitution. He also encouraged anyone facing rights violations or bribery demands from officers to report to the police immediately.
