US Sanctions Nicaragua’s Vice Interior Minister Over Rights Abuses

US Sanctions Nicaragua’s Vice Interior Minister Over Rights Abuses

The United States has imposed sanctions on Nicaragua’s Vice Minister of the Interior, Luis Roberto Cañas Novoa, accusing him of gross human rights violations during the April 2018 protests. Under Section 7031(c), Cañas Novoa and his immediate family are now barred from entering the US. Washington says this action highlights its commitment to hold officials accountable for the violent crackdown that left over 325 demonstrators dead. Nicaraguan authorities reject the accusations as external interference. This latest measure adds to a growing list of sanctions against President Ortega’s administration as tensions over governance and human rights persist.

Focusing sanctions on a single minister risks overlooking the broader network that enabled those rights abuses back in April 2018.

Local NGOs should document ongoing violations and share reports with international bodies to bolster pressure and keep sanctions focused on accountability.
