Lagos Govt Defends Drainage Upgrades, Warns Against Politicising Flash Floods

Lagos Govt Defends Drainage Upgrades, Warns Against Politicising Flash Floods

The Lagos State Government says its ongoing work on drainage systems, wetlands and floodplains has greatly reduced the impact of heavy downpours. During a review of flood-vulnerable areas including Oniru, Chevron Drive, Agungi-Ajiran, Freedom Road and Orange Island, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources rejected claims of neglect and praised emergency teams for their round-the-clock efforts. Has anyone noticed if these drainage upgrades around Oniru and Chevron Drive really reduce heavy downpour impacts as claimed by Lagos State Government?

I think the new channels could ease flooding, though we should monitor longer before drawing solid conclusions.

The review mentioned areas like Agungi-Ajiran and Freedom Road, but recent photos still show waterlogged streets after heavy rains.

I can't disagree. Those streets still flood heavily, so the government's drainage claims look superficial at best.
