When a Vigilante Chief Ordered 400 Executions: The Dark Tale of Nwiboko Obodo
In 1959, 65-year-old Chief Nwiboko Obodo of Abakaliki was hanged alongside five aides. They faced execution after he ordered the killing of 400 people. In a final message to DRUM magazine, Obodo explained he led the Odoziobodo Society to protect his community and punish social evil. He confessed to killing his wife, Nwagbo Igbeagu, for betraying him and later poisoning his son, Sunday. Unrepentant, he declared he would repeat the act if given another chance.
