PAHO Warns Almost 470 Million People in the Americas Live with Neurological Disorders

A new report by the Pan American Health Organization shows that nearly 470 million people in the Americas live with neurological disorders. It estimates that two in every five people in the region are affected by conditions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These disorders are now a leading cause of disability and death, straining health systems and economies. The report lists common conditions such as stroke, migraine, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. It highlights that many cases can be prevented or better managed through early diagnosis, improved healthcare access and stronger public policies. The findings also expose deep inequalities in low-income and rural communities, where specialist shortages and lack of diagnostic tools remain critical obstacles. PAHO calls on governments to integrate neurological care into primary health services. It urges investment in rehabilitation, research, workforce development and public awareness. Experts say tackling risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, tobacco use and air pollution could significantly reduce the region’s disease burden.
