Four Years After Court Upholds Adoption Rights, Child Remains Missing
An act of trust during the COVID-19 pandemic has turned into a harrowing custody dispute. A Nigerian-American couple legally adopted a minor in 2020 and placed her with a longtime family friend in Nigeria while travel plans stalled. That arrangement was always meant to be temporary. In 2022, the caregiver sued the adoptive parents, sparking a four-year legal battle. The Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed the couple’s custodial rights and declared the caregiving arrangement temporary. Yet the child has not been reunited with her lawful parents and has not been seen at her last known location since 2022. We call on law enforcement, child protection agencies, civil society groups, and all relevant stakeholders to urgently locate the child and ensure her safety. No child should vanish amid ongoing court orders and custody proceedings.
