Nigeria Destroys 19,000 Recovered Illegal Weapons to Curb Insecurity
The Federal Government has destroyed about 19,000 illicit, obsolete and unserviceable small arms and light weapons recovered across Nigeria, according to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Speaking in Abuja at the destruction of 2,809 weapons, Ribadu said illegal arms continue to fuel terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and other crimes. He said publicly destroying recovered weapons prevents them from returning to criminal circulation. The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons said it has recovered more than 21,000 weapons since its creation. The Nigeria Police Force contributed the largest share, including 11,907 automatic firearms and locally fabricated weapons recovered during operations nationwide. Ribadu urged communities, traditional rulers and religious leaders to give security agencies credible information on illegal weapons, trafficking and local arms manufacture.
