Oyo Governor Urges UN Probe of Ogbomoso School Abduction
Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, has called on the UN and international human rights bodies to investigate the May 15 abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire LGA. He expressed relief at the safe release of most victims and mourned those who died during the ordeal and rescue efforts. He paid tribute to teachers Joel Adesiyan, Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun, as well as security personnel, hunters and Amotekun operatives who lost their lives. He also prayed for injured survivor Bamidele Paul and thanked residents for their patience and support. Makinde warned that criminal groups remain a threat and urged citizens to stay vigilant. He encouraged prompt reporting of suspicious movements via the state’s toll-free emergency line. To prevent future incidents, the government will tighten surveillance around routes linking communities to Old Oyo National Park, improve community intelligence and deepen collaboration with security agencies. The governor stressed the need for a transparent account of the abduction and called for an independent international inquiry to ensure accountability.
