Irete: The Reckoning Review – Witchcraft, Comedy and Royal Intrigue Unleashed

Irete: The Reckoning Review – Witchcraft, Comedy and Royal Intrigue Unleashed

Irete: The Reckoning is a captivating Yoruba epic starring Dele Odule, Segun Ogungbe, Deyemi Okanlawon, Faithia Balogun, Ayo Olaiya, Sola Sobowale, Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo, Kolawole Ajeyemi, and Broda Shaggi. The story weaves witchcraft, betrayal, and love as a fallen star named Egbin shatters a king’s vow to the witch who once saved his kingdom. From a tense bush confrontation to flashbacks revealing Osunrayi’s pain, the film keeps us engaged at every turn. Costume design stands out, with vibrant Aso Oke, Aso Ofi, and Adire outfits highlighting royal grandeur. The witches’ coven set evokes a dark underworld, and well-lit night scenes bring the supernatural to life, complete with a commendable fireball effect. Performances shine, especially Omowunmi Ogungbe as Osunrayi and the actress behind Egbin. Broda Shaggi and Segun Ogungbe deliver timely comic relief, lightening the tension. This film earns an 8/10 for its storytelling, acting, and visual quality, marking another step forward for modern Yoruba cinema.
