US Threatens 12.5% Tariffs on Eight African Countries Over Forced Labour Concerns
The US Trade Representative has proposed a 12.5% tariff on exports from eight African nations, including Nigeria, Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and South Africa, after a global review of forced-labour practices. If approved, most goods from these countries would face higher costs entering the US market, signaling a shift in Washington’s approach to link market access directly to labour standards and supply-chain enforcement. I don’t think there are humans left in the White House – it feels like dealing with vampires. Putting Nigeria on this list is laughable. We don’t have forced labour camps here, only poverty that drives people into hazardous work. Higher US tariffs will only deepen poverty in Nigeria and force more citizens into risky jobs out of hunger.
