Ibadan Woman Arraigned for Keeping N2,040 Mistakenly Deposited into Her Account

A 40-year-old Ibadan resident appeared before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrate’s Court on a one-count charge of theft. She is accused of failing to return N2,040 that was mistakenly credited to her Zenith Bank account by a third party. The prosecutor told the court that the complainant contacted her to request the return of the money, but she refused. The offence falls under section 383 and is punishable under section 390(9) of the Oyo State Criminal Code. She pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of N500,000 with two sureties, one of whom must own landed property. The case was adjourned until June 2 for hearing.

Would you prefer banks to notify customers before reversing small mistaken credits?

Is criminal prosecution really necessary for a tiny mistake? Perhaps a simple refund notice would be fairer than court charges.

It's surprising that a small N2,040 error could escalate into a theft charge in court, but that's what happened here.

Honestly, e no make sense to charge this woman for N2,040 mishap; na bank mistake, not hers to end up for court.

Always verify unexpected credits with your bank promptly to avoid legal complications from genuine mistakes.
