Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos Mourns Rev. Gabriel Osu, Dies at 71

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the passing of Very Rev. Gabriel Osu. He died on Friday, May 8, 2026, after a brief illness at the age of 71. Ordained in December 1981, Rev. Osu dedicated over four decades to priestly service across Lagos—serving parishes such as Holy Cross Cathedral, St Gregory’s College and St John the Evangelist in Oshodi. He also led media engagement for the Archdiocese as Director of Social Communications and shaped the Catholic Herald as Editor-in-Chief. Known for his warmth, humour and close ties with the press, Rev. Osu was the Parish Priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Lekki until his death. The Archdiocese said details of his burial arrangements will be shared by the family and church in due course.
