Despite N32.8 Trillion Defence Spend in 15 Years, Nigeria’s Insecurity Persists
Nigeria has spent N32.88 trillion on defence over the last 15 years. This accounted for about 12.5% of national budgets from 2012 to 2026. Yet insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and communal clashes still plague many communities. Security data shows over 100,000 deaths since 2012 and more than 3.7 million displaced Nigerians in nearly 3,900 camps. Threats range from insurgency in the North-East and banditry in the North-West to oil theft in the Niger Delta and maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea. Recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri have raised fresh fears. The National Assembly is now scrutinising defence spending as it reviews the proposed N58.47 trillion 2026 budget. Around N5.41 trillion is earmarked for security, with N3.154 trillion for the Ministry of Defence. Committees will focus on troop welfare, logistics, intelligence and procurement to ensure better accountability and measurable improvements in national safety.
