Why State Police Reform Is Vital for Nigeria’s Security
The debate on state policing in Nigeria often raises fears of political abuse and threats to national unity. Yet our democratic institutions are far stronger than they were five decades ago. Robust judicial independence, legislative oversight, active civil society and a vigilant media provide new safeguards. Many federal democracies successfully maintain both national and state police services with clear roles and coordination. Under the current proposal, the Federal Police would handle national threats such as terrorism and organized crime. State Police would focus on community policing, local intelligence and rapid response to neighbourhood incidents. This complementary model could bring law enforcement closer to the people and improve overall security. Constitutional checks like judicial review, legislative supervision and defined federal intervention powers would protect against misuse. After more than fifty years under a centralized system, carefully designed State Police reform offers a measured response to evolving security challenges.
