Ufuoma McDermott’s Regret After Alex Ekubo’s Death: “I Beat Myself Up”

Ufuoma McDermott’s Regret After Alex Ekubo’s Death: “I Beat Myself Up”

Nollywood actress Ufuoma McDermott opened up about her biggest regret following the death of Alex Ekubo. At his burial on June 18, many celebrities paid their last respects. On Instagram, Ufuoma recalled how Uti Nwachukwu introduced them in Calabar in December 2010 and noted she married on Alex’s birthday that year. She admitted she’s beaten herself up for not sending him a message one day earlier. Fellow actors Rita Dominic and Chiwetalu Agu also shared tributes. Dominic spoke of her struggle to accept the loss, while Agu praised Alex’s passion and promise as a storyteller on stage and screen. Alex Ekubo passed away at 40 on May 11 after a battle with advanced kidney cancer. A Service of Songs was held in Lekki on June 10, where friends and fans honoured his legacy.

What do you think Ufuoma meant when she said 'I beat myself up' after Alex Ekubo's death?

Could it be she's blaming herself for something she did or failed to do before his passing?

It's interesting she looked back to that introduction in Calabar and tied it to her biggest regret.

Is it fair to blame herself for circumstances entirely out of her control, though? That feels a bit harsh.

Sharing personal regrets can help others process loss. Perhaps Ufuoma's reflection inspires more open grief conversations in Nollywood circles.
